Lawrence City Band to celebrate dance

The Lawrence City Band’s sixth concert of the summer season will ask “Shall We Dance?”

The concert starts at 8 p.m. Wednesday at South Park, 11th and Massachusetts streets.

The show will feature music from the big band era, polkas, folk dances and tunes from “My Fair Lady.”

The band is under the direction of Robert Foster.

‘River City Chronicles’

John Brown’s role in abolition examined

Historian Matthew Veatch and Kansas University assistant professor of history Jonathan Earle discuss the anti-slavery movement in mid-1850s Lawrence at 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. Monday on “River City Chronicles” on 6News.

Veatch, Kansas State Historical Society assistant state historian, and Earle describe the radical nature of John Brown’s egalitarian social and political positions regarding blacks.

“River City Chronicles” is a weekly feature in honor of Lawrence’s sesquicentennial and will run each Monday through Sept. 13.

Olive patron to show paintings at gallery

The buck — and the bug — stops here.

The Halstead doctor who fronted most of the start-up money to open Olive Gallery and Art Supply also happens to be a painter, and an exhibition of his work opened Saturday at the gallery, 15 E. Eighth St.

Gene Marsh’s “Don’t Bug Me” will be on view through July 28. An opening reception will be from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, with music by Dogs on Stilts and Kid’s Corner art by Jordan Marable.

When he’s not busy as an emergency physician, Marsh teaches private art lessons to a few children. His work is in several private collections across the country and around the world.

He co-owns the Olive with Jill Kleinhans and Bailey Kivett.

Gallery hours are noon to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 7 p.m. Sunday.

Blues jam king on Brown Bag bill

Lonnie Ray’s Blues Band will entertain outdoor diners Thursday during the Brown Bag Concert.

The show runs from noon to 1 p.m. at the corner of Ninth and Massachusetts streets. People are encouraged to bring their lunch and enjoy music by Lawrence’s godfather of organizes jam sessions.

The free summer concert series is sponsored by the Lawrence parks and recreation department and Downtown Lawrence, Inc. It continues through July.
