Television bangs out July 4 fare

Pomp, patriotism and pyrotechnics dominate July 4th programming. Barry Bostwick is host of “A Capitol Fourth 2004” (7 p.m. Sunday, PBS). Musical guests include Vince Gill, Amy Grant, Clay Aiken, Robin Gibb and Yolanda Adams. Erich Kunzel conducts the National Symphony Orchestra. Musical themes include a 150th-birthday salute to John Phillips Sousa, a medley of classic film scores and a posthumous tribute to Ray Charles. The evening culminates with rousing music accompanying the colorful fireworks display over the Washington Monument.

Carson Daly is host of the Annual Macy’s Fireworks Spectacular (8 p.m. Sunday, NBC), featuring new “American Idol” Fantasia Burrino.

Keith Lockhart conducts the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra on the “Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular 2004” (9 p.m., CBS). Guests include David Lee Roth and Broadway singer Jennifer Holliday.

Kelsey Grammer is host of “An American Celebration at Ford’s Theatre” (9 p.m., ABC), taped earlier before a live audience including President Bush and first lady Laura Bush. Performers include Patti LaBelle, Gary Sinise, Jessica Simpson, David Spade, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Brad Paisley, Michelle Williams and Harold Wheeler and the American Celebration Orchestra.

  • Does Thomas Jefferson’s concept of the pursuit of happiness include “Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest” (11 a.m. Sunday, ESPN)? Competitive gluttons try to cram as many franks down their gullets as they can in 12 minutes. Japan’s Takeru Kobayashi holds the current world record, consuming 50 dogs and buns in 12 minutes in 2001.
  • To celebrate Philadelphia as the birthplace of the Declaration of Independence, AMC unspools all five installments of the “Rocky” film series, beginning with “Rocky” (5 a.m.) and moving on to II (7:30 a.m.), III (10 a.m.), IV (12:30 p.m.) and V (2:30 p.m.). That’s at least two “Rocky”s too many.
