Pow Wow planned at Washburn University

Topeka — Grand entries are planned at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. at a Pow Wow from 2 p.m. to midnight on Jan. 10 at Whiting Gymnasium, Washburn University.

The event is co-sponsored by the Washburn University multicultural affairs office and the Topeka USD 501 Indian parent committee.

KC Symphony to perform ‘greats’

Kansas City, Mo. — Grant Llewellyn will lead the Kansas City Symphony in “From Great to ‘The Great'” Friday, Saturday and Jan. 11.

The program — Beethoven’s Overture to “Egmont,” Piano Concerto No. 4 and Schubert’s Ninth Symphony, “The Great” — will be performed at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Lyric Theatre, 11th and Central, and 2 p.m. Jan. 11 at Yardley Hall, Johnson County Community College, 12345 College Blvd.

At 43, Llewellyn is one of a handful of young conductors lending a more approachable face to classical music. He last conducted the Kansas City Symphony in February 2001. Guest soloist this time around will be Antonio Pompa-Baldi, winner of the Silver Medal at the 11th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.

Hays Arts Council accepting photo entries

The Hays Arts Council is calling for entries in its 20th annual Five-State Photography Exhibition.

Entries will be accepted in the categories of nature, people and open from Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska, Missouri and Oklahoma.

Entry forms are due Jan. 30, and works selected to be in the show must arrive by Feb. 2.

Juror will be Angie Buckley, a photography instructor at the Art Institute of Colorado. She will divide a $1,500 cash award between the three categories.

Exhibit highlights art of advertising

Topeka — Winners of the Topeka Advertising Federation’s 2004 ADDY Awards will be on display beginning Saturday in “Art in Advertising” at the Mulvane Art Museum of Washburn University.

The show, which will remain on view through Feb. 15, introduces visitors to the artistic dimension of advertising.

Free public programs associated with the exhibit include a panel discussion at 12:15 p.m. Jan. 29 called “Behind the ADDY’s Forum: Art at Work,” and two “WU View” gallery talks — one at 5:15 p.m. Feb. 3 by Russell Burton and one at 5:15 p.m. Feb. 10 by Washburn art professor Azyz Sharafy.

Museum hours are 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday-Wednesday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday-Friday and 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Saturday-Sunday.
