Baldwin author and former Kansas University student Ande Parks and Shawnee author B. Clay Moore will talk and sign copies of their recently-published graphic novels from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. March 11.

The event, part of the Local Authors Series at Oread Books, is free and open to the public.

Parks’ debut as a dramatic writer is “Union Station,” with art by Uruguay’s Eduardo Barreto. The book depicts graphically an infamous incident in Kansas City history: the 1933 Union Station Massacre, a wild shootout that left five dead and was the catalyst for creation of the modern-day FBI.

The Washington Post said readers would finish “Union Station” wishing the TV show “CSI” was as good. Parks is now researching for another graphic novel of historical fiction set in Kansas.

A veteran comics artist, Parks has worked on books featuring Superman, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man and Daredevil, and is the inker for the DC Comics’ Green Arrow series.

Moore’s recent graphic novel, “Hawaiian Dick — Volume One: Byrd of Paradise,” illustrated by Steven Griffin, collects three issues of the acclaimed comics series “Hawaiian Dick” plus many added features. Set in 1953 Hawaii, exiled stateside detective Byrd finds himself immersed in a dark paradise where supernatural manifestations of the island’s myths lie just around every corner. A sequel is in the works, titled “Hawaiian Dick: The Last Resort.”

Moore, a freelance writer, began his work in comics in 1998. Other projects due out this year include an original graphic novel, “Clean Living,” a five-part mini-series, “Anthem,” and a three-part mini-series titled “Vampi Vicious Circle” based on the Vampirella character.
