Freight train carrying Army tanks derails

A Union Pacific freight train carrying Army vehicles derailed late Friday morning south of downtown.

Kansas City Fire Department and Union Pacific officials said eight cars of the eastbound 75-car train left a section of Burlington Northern Santa Fe tracks that run near Interstate 35 around 10:20 a.m. Two tanks carried on one car flipped onto their sides, but no injuries were reported.

Officials did not immediately identify the cause of the accident.

Union Pacific officials said the train was hauling tanks and trucks from Yermo, Calif., to Memphis, Tenn.

Traffic in the area was not affected, but officials said other trains would be delayed.

Fire officials said some diesel fuel spilled from the toppled tanks, which can each hold up to 1,000 gallons of fuel.

Kansas City Fire Department Chief Germane Friends said there was no danger of the fuel leaking into water or sewer systems.

Three teens charged for throwing rock

Three Kansas teenagers have been charged with aggravated battery for allegedly throwing a rock that crashed through a van’s windshield and critically injured a 13-year-old girl.

Tereasa R. Grenawalt, 16, of Louisburg, Nathan T. Van Norman, 14, of La Cygne, and Kyle L. Coleman, 16, of Linn Valley were charged with intentional aggravated battery with bodily harm, aggravated battery and criminal damage to property in the juvenile division of Miami County District Court.

The three teens were in juvenile custody Friday.

Authorities said the teens threw a 4-inch rock that struck a van Sunday and crashed through its windshield, critically injuring Kathleen Pruitt.

Pruitt was in fair condition after several days of recovery, according to hospital officials.

The arrests came after authorities received a tip, Miami County Undersheriff Mark Schmidt said.
