Sports Illustrated lauds KU's student section

Sports Illustrated has confirmed what many Kansas University students have thought for a long time -- KU has one of the best student sections for NCAA men's basketball.

But SI said while the Jayhawk faithful couldn't unseat Duke University's Cameron Crazies, it was one of six fan groups "that someday could challenge the Blue Devils' supremacy."

"Allen Fieldhouse boasts one of the greatest home court advantages in the nation, and the students also win points for good behavior -- sort of," the magazine's campus newspaper supplement said in its Jan. 29 edition. "Known as some of the classiest kids out there, Jayhawk fans once chided former Oklahoma State center

Bryant Reeves, who was scoreless at the time, with chants of 'Reeves has ze-ro.'"

But, the magazine noted, KU coach Roy Williams waved his hand and the chanting ended.

"Whether new boss Bill Self can maintain such control is yet to be seen," the article said.

Rally

Group protests sentences in sexual assault cases

Topeka -- About 75 people rallied Monday outside the Shawnee County Courthouse to protest reduced sentences given in a Lawrence rape case and Topeka sodomy case.

"This sends a message to district court judges that someone is watching and we are concerned," said Lisa Hecht, director of the Topeka YWCA Battered Women Task Force, who organized the rally.

The protesters decried decisions by Douglas County District Judge Paula Martin, who sentenced two men to 60 days in jail and probation in the rape of a 13-year-old girl, and Shawnee County District Judge Franklin Theis, who sentenced a man to probation for criminal sodomy against a 6-year-old boy.

Fund raising

KU First gets new goal

With its original goal of $500 million in the rear-view mirror, the KU First steering committee has set its sights on a new number -- $600 million.

The committee, which is overseeing the largest fund-raising drive in Kansas University history, set the new goal at a meeting Saturday. The $500 million mark was surpassed in November with a $15 million gift from the Kansas Masonic Foundation.

The campaign, which began in 1998, runs through the end of this year. It has raised money for campus buildings, scholarships, professorships and other programs.

"Donors are helping the university reach a new level of excellence by stepping up to provide the KU community with more financial aid opportunities, new distinguished scholars and state-of-the-art facilities," said Forrest Hoglund, KU First chairman. "We've come so far since we publicly announced our goal back in September 2001, and we're confident we can achieve our new goal."

Crime

KU student's pants set on fire at Replay

Someone set a Kansas University student's pants on fire early Saturday at the Replay Lounge, 946 Mass.

According to a police report, the 24-year-old man was waiting to order a drink at the bar just after midnight when someone set fire to a leg of his pants. He suffered burns to his leg but declined medical treatment at the scene, said Sgt. Mike Pattrick, a police spokesman.

Police are investigating the incident as a possible aggravated battery. They're trying to identify a young man seen nearby who was wearing blue jeans, a dark knit cap and a tan coat.
