Brownback favored Iraqi war even without evidence of WMD

? U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback, a Republican from Kansas, today said he would have voted to go to war with Iraq even though it appears Saddam Hussein had no weapons of mass destruction.

“We know at that time, and we have hard evidence today, he had terrorists on his soil and he had used chemical weapons,” Brownback said referring to Hussein.

Brownback, who supported the resolution to use military force against Iraq, said the behavior of Hussein required the United State to take action.

Hussein had used dangerous weapons, attacked neighboring countries and killed thousands of his own citizens, Brownback said.

But Brownback said the intelligence that said Hussein had weapons of mass destruction was a failure, and showed the need to make corrections.

“I don’t think we had very good human intelligence assets in the region, or we didn’t know how to assess the information we were given,” he said.

Brownback’s comments came in response to reporters’ questions after he spoke with state lawmakers about economic development.
