Liza Minnelli, the new heavyweight champ?

David Gest was the groom at the freakiest celebrity sideshow wedding of the decade. Fans of tabloid silliness can’t get enough of him. Gest, best known for producing Michael Jackson’s concerts, looks like a bad “after” picture on “Extreme Makeover.” The man has eyebrows that raise eyebrows.

He claims to have “saved” wife and singer Liza Minnelli from her demons and put her back on the path to a successful career. As a couple, Liza and David even dabbled with the idea of an “Osbournes”-like reality show.

Now David Gest is suing his wife and claims to be an injured battered husband. “Dateline” (7 p.m., NBC) correspondent Stone Phillips travels to Hawaii to interview Gest, who is now suing Minnelli for $10 million for alcohol-fueled bouts of violence. Gest alleges that Minnelli “beat me and hit me everywhere.” He also claims that she attacked the couple’s bodyguard. “The pain was so enormous that I get now 80 shots around the head to deaden the nerves,” Gest explains. Minnelli has denied ever hitting Gest.

  • Speaking of sideshow weddings, Ed and Carol plan a circus-themed wedding ceremony on the fourth-season finale of “Ed” (8 p.m., NBC). Barring some miracle, this is probably the series-ender as well. Tonight’s big-top wedding ceremony should wrap up the Stuckyville comedy on an appropriately cute and cloying note.
