Horses stranded in downtown Lawrence
A wrong turn and mechanical failure by a truck pulling a horse trailer turned into a treat for youngsters this afternoon along Massachusetts Street in downtown Lawrence.
Jeremy Bennett meant to drive his wife Kati, friend Stevie Magnuson, and two horses, Hallie and Tassie, from their home outside Hutchinson to a horse trainer in Leavenworth.
But a wrong turn on U.S. Highway 59 got Bennett slightly lost in Lawrence.
Eventually, he turned the trailer onto Massachusetts Street and was headed back to U.S. Highway 40 when his clutch broke down, leaving the truck, and the horses in the trailer stranded in the 700 block of Massachusetts Street.
Once a tow truck came to remove the pickup and trailer, Kati Bennett and Magnuson led their horses out onto the street, where passers-by gathered to pet them.
The Bennetts and Magnuson, along with the help of Jeremy’s dog Sadie, then led the horses to an empty lot at Sixth and Connecticut.
There, the horses grazed on dead grass while their owners waited for a friend with a trailer to come get them.
