Address: P.O. Box 1121, Lawrence

Contact: (785) 979-1440

Meals on Wheels needs drivers, particularly over the holiday break when many Kansas University student volunteers are out of town. Volunteers deliver meals to homebound residents between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. It generally takes less than an hour to complete deliveries. Volunteers also are needed at the hospital food preparation site to answer questions and phones while delivery volunteers are distributing meals. For more information about volunteering with Meals on Wheels, call Kim Cullis at 979-1440.

Immediate volunteer needs

  • The Jubilee Cafe serves breakfast to homeless people from 6 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday and Friday mornings at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt. The organization can use additional volunteers to help at meals during KU’s winter break. To sign up to volunteer for a shift, e-mail jubilee@ku.edu.
  • The ICaN Friendly Visitors program is looking for caring individuals to volunteer one to two hours a week to assist older people who are living independently. This requires an ongoing commitment to a person who might need someone to help with groceries or a friend to visit with once a week. Call Interfaith Caring Neighbors at 749-2005 for more information.
  • The Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence needs volunteer basketball referees for its after-school program Wednesday basketball games. Games will be from 3:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. Wednesdays at different school locations where after-school programs are held. For more information, call Roger Ross, program manager at the Boys and Girls Club, at 841-6854 or 423-3774.
