This Weekend’s Highlights

The Baloney Ponyz

Is this Christmas 1987? The Baloney Ponyz Dysfunctional Christmas Celebration will likely feel that way, with Kansas City’s musical throwback to the days of hair metal. Picture spandex, Japanese headbands and Charvel Jackson guitars. For almost a decade, the Kansas City band has shared stages with acts such as Vince Neil, Cinderella, Warrant, Dio and Quiet Riot. The Baloney Ponyz perform 9 p.m. Saturday at The Hurricane, 4048 Broadway St., Kansas City, Mo.

In Your Absence

“Dark and moody” rock is the drug of the month for Kansas City’s In Your Absence. The female-fronted band cites Garbage as an influence and plays a similarly jilted brand of sassy alt-rock. Opener Anvil Chorus also sports a femme fatale up front, but favors a gentler brand of Mazzy Star-inspired songwriting. The bands play 10:45 Sunday at The Jackpot Saloon, 943 Mass.

The Last Call Girls

The Last Call Girls play a unique breed of original music drawing from old country greats such as Loretta Lynn, Hank Williams and Johnny Cash and combining it with elements of punk rock, alt-country and the blues. The lyrics of this Kansas City quintet reflect the day-to-day life of the middle class in the Midwest from the perspective of women who aren’t afraid to speak their minds, cause a stir or rock and roll. The Last Call Girls join The Gaslights, 10 p.m. Saturday at Davey’s Uptown, 3402 Main St., Kansas City, Mo.

‘A Christmas Carol’

Charles Dickens described Ebenezer Scrooge, the center of his classic “A Christmas Carol” as “a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, old sinner!” For 24 years, the Kansas City Repertory Theatre has brought Scrooge and his cast of foes-turned-friends to Kansas City-area audiences. The tradition continues this year with performances at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. today and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday at the Spencer Theatre, 4949 Cherry St., Kansas City, Mo.

‘The Night Before Christmas’

“‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house … ” is a line we all know by heart. But there’s a magical story behind the words to the poem by Clement Clark Moore. Kansas City’s Coterie Theatre takes audiences back to Christmas Eve, 1882, to meet the poet’s children, who find the best hopes of the holiday season captured in the timeless verse. The 55-minute play by Lowell Swortzell will be staged at 2 p.m. Sunday at the theater, 2450 Grand Ave., Suite 144, Kansas City, Mo.
