Enrollment drop forces budget cuts at WSU
Wichita ? Wichita State University may have to cut back on hiring new professors and teaching assistants because of a decline in enrollment.
Officials had expected a drop in enrollment by international students but did not anticipate fewer U.S. students, said Roger Lowe, vice president for administration and finance.
Last year, with an enrollment of 14,896 students, the university received about $39 million in tuition.
Enrollment this fall was 14,298, so the university is cutting about $750,000 from its budget.
“We anticipated because of the continual decline in international students that the tuition revenue would be short,” Lowe said. “But in actuality, the drop was much greater.”
The business school’s share of the reduction is $100,000.
“The one effect it’s going to have on campus is a lot of people are going to have to forgo searches for faculty,” said John Beehler, dean of the W. Frank Barton School of Business. “You have to cancel a search. We are short on faculty to begin with.”
A $70,000 cut in the budget of the College of Fine Arts represents about two faculty positions.
“The overwhelming majority of the budget is in personnel,” said Rodney Miller, dean of the college.
The university does not expect to cut any programs or eliminate any faculty jobs, said John Hutchinson, vice president for academic affairs. But the enrollment decline also means fewer teaching assistants will be needed, he said.
