Big chill headed in for weekend

Lawrence will get blue skies and temperatures soaring to 50 this afternoon. But a cold front moving in will bring a wintery chill to the area for the weekend.

“It’s going to be the last 50-degree day for a while,” said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

Shortly before 8 a.m. today, the temperature was 23, with a wind chill of 18 degrees, she said. But conditions will start warming up under sunny skies.

“Sunshine will rule the forecast today,” Schack said. Temperatures will hit 45 by noon and will head up to 50 by 4 p.m., she said. The average high for this date is 42.

Clouds will thicken up this afternoon and tonight as a cold front begins moving in from the north, she said.

“We might see a flake of snow as the clouds come through tonight,” she said. Saturday’s morning low temperature will be 21, with the high hitting 44 Saturday afternoon, she said.

Cold air continues to move in Saturday night, with the low dropping to 14 by Sunday morning. Sunday’s high will climb to only 28, she said.

“It will be the coldest air we’ve seen yet this season.” Schack said.

Monday’s low temperature will fall to 12, with the high reaching 41.
