Fog advisory issued for northeast Kansas

A thick fog blanketed Lawrence this morning, reducing visibility to one-tenth of a mile in some areas, said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“Be extra cautious on your drive to work,” Schack said. The fog will hang around until the noon hour before finally burning off, she said.

Most of northeast Kansas is under a dense fog advisory issued by the National Weather Service through 10 a.m. The weather service says motorists should realize that visibility can drop unexpectedly to near zero under the dense patches of fog. The official visibility, recorded at Lawrence Municipal Airport, was 0.25 of a mile at 8:30 a.m.

“It’s a dreary start to the week,” Schack said. Low clouds will hang around this afternoon, with the high reaching 55. Tonight, Lawrence is in the path of rain coming up from the south, most of which will skirt by and head off to the north and east, she said.

“We bring in scattered showers and maybe a rumble of thunder tonight,” Schack said.

Overnight, the temperature will drop to a low of 36 by early Tuesday morning, she said. Then blue skies finally make a return to the area.

“We bring back the sunshine on Tuesday and keep it around until Saturday,” Schack said. “We have a dry forecast Tuesday through Saturday with some nice looking temperatures.”

Tuesday’s high temperature will be 49, with partly cloudy skies.

Wednesday’s morning low will be 28, with the high reaching 51 Wednesday afternoon.
