Charges increased for vigilante store owners
Charges have been increased against three men accused of taking the law into their own hands and assaulting a man they suspected of burglarizing their glass-blowing shop.
Assistant Dist. Atty. Brad Burke on Thursday amended charges against the men to include aggravated kidnapping and aggravated robbery. The men also are charged with aggravated assault, auto burglary and making a criminal threat.
Burke told Judge Paula Martin that the men, owners of the yet-to-open B’s Glass, 311 N. Second St., lured the suspected burglar to the business Nov. 26, surrounded him, squeezed him with a bear hug until he passed out, restrained him in a chair and told him they would break his knees with a metal rod.
Lawrence Police happened on the scene after someone in the area reported a disturbance.
The men are Brian J. Hawk, 23, Kansas City, Kan.; Brendon B. Hodgson, 22, Lawrence; and Christopher J. Kerner, 27, Lawrence.
Martin increased their bond from $15,000 to $45,000, but they were released Thursday evening, according to jail records.
The burglar was suspected of stealing about $24,000 in glassware on Nov. 19, according to a report. But the store’s owners didn’t file a report until after they were arrested and charged.
