Driver reports being robbed by fake officer

A 24-year-old Lawrence woman claims a man impersonating a police officer pulled her over on Kansas Highway 10 early Wednesday morning.

The woman told Douglas County Sheriff’s deputies that a man driving a black car with a red flashing light on the dashboard stopped her as she was heading westbound on K-10, around 1 a.m.

The woman reported the man, who was not wearing any type of uniform, then pulled her out of her car and demanded money. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating. They believe it could have happened outside their jurisdiction in Johnson County. The victim did not report the incident until she returned home about an hour later.

KU student dies

A Kansas University senior who made history in 1985 has died, university officials said Wednesday.

Grant Reser, who was the first child in Kansas and the 12th in the world to undergo a heart transplant, died Saturday of an infection related to lymphoma. He was from Topeka.

Reser, 23, was a KU student this spring when he was diagnosed with cancer. He was enrolled to resume studies in spring 2005.

Chancellor Robert Hemenway issued a statement Wednesday on Reser’s death.

“I am saddened to learn of the death of Grant Reser,” Hemenway said. “On behalf of the university, I would like to extend our deepest condolences to his parents, family and friends for the tragic loss of such a young man who exhibited such a brave spirit in the face of so many challenges.”
