Couch potatoes fry on NBC’s Olympics television overdose

If you worry that you’ve been watching too much Olympics coverage, think again. NBC has assembled a team of 22 of the nation’s best couch potatoes to try to shatter the record for endurance viewing. The marathon TV-gazing contest began with Friday’s opening ceremony and will continue until the last eye shuts. A German TV glutton currently holds the record of 50 hours and 5 minutes of consecutive viewing, so the Guinness record could fall on Sunday evening at 9:05 p.m. Kevin Keaveney, the last American to hold this world record, is among the intrepid contestants. He’s still the red, white and blue champ with a record of 46 hours, 30 minutes and 50 seconds. How does he prepare? “I will be retreating to the desert and draining my mind of summer reruns so I might approach this contest with spirit refreshed and eyes anew.”

Tonight’s scheduled prime-time Olympics coverage (7 p.m., NBC) includes men’s gymnastics, men’s and women’s swimming finals, men’s diving and men’s cycling.

  • Would you trust a college student to redesign and renovate your kitchen? How about a college student with a limited budget ($2,000) and only two days to get the job done? It may sound like an interior decorator’s version of a barber college, but it’s the new series “Designer Finals” (8 p.m. today, HGTV).

“Finals” asks students from prestigious design institutes to devise plans, consult with their “client,” hire crews (and beg their friends and families for help) and oversee the renovation all on a shoestring budget.

Sunday’s other highlights

  • Have you fallen out of the Nick and Jessica habit? Catch up with a 4 1/2-hour marathon of “Newlyweds” (4:30 p.m., MTV) repeats.
  • Tom Selleck stars in the 2004 drama “Ike: Countdown to D-Day” (7 p.m., History). Despite a remarkable resemblance to his subject, Selleck plays Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower with a grim chain-smoking determination. The film never evokes Ike’s Midwestern charm or the infectious smile that made him one of the most beloved figures of the 20th century.
