‘The Jesus Factor’ studies Bush’s faith
“Frontline” (8 p.m., PBS, check local listings) examines President Bush’s religious faith in “The Jesus Factor.” The hourlong documentary devotes roughly equal time to the personal and political ramifications of Bush’s public embrace of religion.
The first half discusses how Bush turned to Bible study and a “born again” experience when he was wrestling with alcohol addiction and marital problems. The second half shows how young Bush helped his father, an East Coast Episcopalian, reach out to America’s growing Evangelical population, and how Bush’s experiences working on the 1988 and ’92 presidential campaigns showed him how an appeal to religious voters could succeed in Texas (where Bush was twice elected governor) and beyond.
“Jesus” suggests that Bush may be the most openly religious president in generations and offers several sound bites to back that up. But “Jesus” fails to discuss the religious appeal and rhetoric of other presidents. Jimmy Carter, the man who familiarized millions of Americans with the phrase “born again,” is never mentioned here. Nor is John F. Kennedy, whose Catholic faith was an issue in 1960, but who concluded his often-quoted inaugural address with the ringing phrase “God’s work here on Earth must truly be our own.”
l Is cheating by students really new? Or news? Kids have probably been trying to cheat on tests ever since Plato tutored Alexander the Great. But according to tonight’s “PrimeTime” (9 p.m., ABC), high school students have employed some seriously complicated technology to plagiarize essays and steal tests. In addition to “shopping” at Web sites offering plagiarized essays, students have made cagey use of mobile phone cameras to share test questions and answers with their friends.
