Ask any Kansas University men’s basketball fan which player is the most exciting to watch on the court and you’ll hear a variety of names.
Ask a photographer and you’ll most certainly hear only one: freshman J.R. Giddens.
His expressions are dynamic and powerful, and his moves are quick and aerobatic. If he has the ball on a fast break, you better be ready for the dunk; if he has the ball beyond the arc, you gotta be ready for the three.
But like many sports, the most exciting moments often happen when the play is “dead” or before a timeout. “Jube,” short for jubilation, is what these photos are commonly referred to in the news business.
This photo, which was shot during the first half as KU and Georgia Tech battled last weekend in St. Louis, captures Giddens yelling as he runs down the court in front of a wall of cheering KU fans. Because KU lost, this image didn’t run in the paper.
