‘Dog Days’ paperwork taken in car burglary
Don Gardner, known as “Red Dog” to his faithful following of fitness fanatics, said his car was broken into Saturday night in southwest Lawrence.
For 20 years, Gardner, a retired police officer, has volunteered his time, whipping people into shape over the summer during “Dog Days.”
Gardner said the thieves got away with an entire bag full of Dog Days records and paperwork, photographs, magnets and some cash — items not worth much to anyone else, and he wants it back.
Gardner said he thought he left his car unlocked. The thief or thieves also got his wallet. He estimated the total loss from $300 to $400.
“You feel invaded. They’ve taken your privacy, and it makes you mad — real mad,” Gardner said.

KDOT adds features for U.S. 59 safety
The Kansas Department of Transportation announced Thursday that it had added safety features along U.S. Highway 59 between Lawrence and Ottawa, a stretch poised to get a new $214 million freeway in 2009.
“KDOT felt it was important to look at what could be done now to improve safety on this heavily traveled road while we work to design and construct a safer U.S. 59,” said Deb Miller, transportation secretary.
Among the additions:
â More signs, warning devices and reflectors.
â Rumble strips on U.S. Highway 56, to warn approaching drivers of cross traffic.
The department also has committed to keeping pavement markings clear and helping to bolster traffic enforcement efforts.
