‘Cold weather rule’ for utilities to begin

Topeka — Saturday marks the start of the “cold weather rule,” Kansas Corporation Commission officials said.

The rule ensures gas and electric customers who otherwise might have their service disconnected because of payment problems are able to keep their utilities on during winter months.

Main conditions for the rule are:

  • If customers can’t pay the entire bill they must call the utility and set up a payment plan.
  • Customers must pay one-twelfth of the amount owed on the current bill and all connect or disconnect fees, plus agree to pay the remainder in equal payments over the next 11 months.
  • Disconnections are prohibited when the forecast calls for temperatures below 35 degrees during the next 24 hours.
  • There must be a 48-hour forecast of temperatures above 35 degrees the day before a utility may disconnect service.
