U.S. 59 project moving ahead

Kansas Department of Transportation officials met Wednesday morning with county lawmakers and planners to discuss the future of U.S. Highway 59 south of Lawrence.

The expansion project in Douglas and Franklin counties is expected to cost more than $200 million and be completed by 2009.

KDOT officials say they will need to completely acquire at least 18 properties in Douglas County — and plan to make initial offers shortly after the first of the year.

Fifty more property owners will likely keep their land — but will have to move their homes or businesses.
