Dedication set for KU building

Kansas University officials will gather at 10 a.m. Oct. 17 to formally dedicate Eaton Hall, the university’s new engineering building.

Much of the 80,000-square-foot, $15 million building has been open since the beginning of the fall semester. Construction recently was completed on the Spahr engineering classroom, a high-tech auditorium that seats 230.

Museum to display Vietnam-era vehicles

Watkins Community Museum of History will display military vehicles from the Vietnam era as part of a tribute to Vietnam veterans.

The vehicles will be available for public viewing from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, in the parking lot at the northeast corner of 11th and Massachusetts streets.

The display will include descriptions of vehicle functions in the war and during peacetime. The show is in conjunction with a Vietnam exhibit now on display at the museum, 1047 Mass.

Discussion examines Columbus’ legacy

A discussion about explorer Christopher Columbus and his “legacy of genocide and colonialization” will be at 6:30 p.m. today at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt.

Speakers will be Dan Wildcat, Michelle Castor and Alvaro Berg, of Latin America Solidarity, as well as representatives of Kansas University’s First Nations Students Assn. The two groups are also sponsoring the discussion along with Lawrence Anarchist Black Cross.

Fire prevention efforts motivate school visits

Eudora-area firefighters will be visiting Eudora’s elementary schools this week as part of fire prevention efforts. Eudora Township firefighters will visit Eudora West Elementary School today and Nottingham Elementary School on Friday. They will bring their trucks, make presentations and answer questions.

Eudora city firefighters plan to have programs for kindergartners, preschoolers and area scouting groups.
