Investigators broaden homicide investigation

Douglas County Sheriff’s officials are casting a wide net Monday as they search for clues in the slaying of an attorney found dead Friday afternoon in her home north of Lawrence.

On Monday morning, deputies were stopping drivers at an intersection near the crime scene to ask if they’d seen or heard anything unusual in the past week. The victim, Carmin Ross-Murray, 40, lived in the 1800 section of East 1150 Road, which is being used temporarily as a detour to Lecompton.

“We’re hoping that with the volume of traffic, perhaps somebody saw something that might be of value to the investigation,” said Lt. Kathy Tate, a sheriff’s spokeswoman.

An autopsy was completed Sunday, but Tate would not release Ross-Murray’s cause of death. So far, the office has followed up on about 50 leads, Tate said.

Tate asked that anyone with information about the crime to call the sheriff’s office at 841-0007 or the Crime Stoppers hot line, 843-TIPS (8477).

“Maybe people don’t think that their information is particularly pertinent, but we would prefer that they contact us and let us make that decision,” Tate said.
