Veterans Day events planned

Military veterans will be saluted today in at least two ceremonies in Lawrence.

Capt. Rich High, a Kansas University professor of naval science, will be the keynote speaker during an 11:11 a.m. ceremony at the Dorsey-Liberty Post No. 14 of the American Legion, 3408 W. Sixth St.

At 4 p.m. KU will conduct a ceremony at the flagpole in front of Strong Hall. At 4:15 p.m. retired Air Force Col. James Riley will speak in the Kansas Union’s Woodruff Auditorium.

After the speech, a lamp will be carried to KU’s Vietnam Memorial for a 24-hour vigil.

City offices in Tonganoxie, Baldwin, McLouth and De Soto will be closed today.

City offices in Lawrence, Ottawa, Oskaloosa and Eudora will be open, as will Douglas County offices. Franklin and Jefferson county offices will be closed.

Most banks will be closed. U.S. Postal Service offices will be closed, and only Express Mail deliveries will be made. UPS will operate as normal.

The Lawrence Public Library will be open. Lawrence Bus Co. and MV Transportation bus services will run as usual.

Journal-World circulation and advertising offices will be open. USA Today will be delivered.
