Leno makes amends for joke

Whitesburg, Ky. — “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno has apologized to an eastern Kentucky doctor for insinuating that he looked like Adolf Hitler.

In a recent bit in which Leno mocked newspaper ads, he showed an ad announcing that Dr. Ricky Collins would be joining the staff of a local medical clinic. The ad included a photograph of Collins, who has dark hair and a small mustache, with the words: “A familiar face in a new place.”

“There’s Ricky Collins,” Leno said in the routine. “He’s no longer the chancellor of Germany. He’s now a doctor.”

Leno said he didn’t intend to offend Collins or his wife, who called to complain, but he insisted the photograph was funny.

Roth keeps intruder at bay

Pasadena, Calif. — David Lee Roth got an unwanted visitor when a man being chased by police climbed over a fence and tried to hide in the rock star’s yard.

The former Van Halen frontman’s publicist said Roth used a shotgun to hold the man at bay until police arrived, but police spokeswoman Janet Pope could not confirm that Wednesday.

“He was laying on the grass when our officers arrived,” Pope said of the man arrested.

She said Charles Cooley, 47, was being pursued by officers responding to complaints of someone throwing rocks at windows around 2 a.m. Saturday. He was arrested for investigation of amphetamine possession.

Officer adds Indy to anthem sites

Indianapolis — Daniel Rodriguez, the New York City policeman who became known for his stirring renditions of “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “God Bless America” after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, will sing the national anthem before the start of the Indianapolis 500.

Rodriguez, who’s on leave from the police department, has performed at the World Series, the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics, the White House, the PBS Memorial Day concert in Washington and Disneyland’s 47th birthday.

The Indianapolis 500, a Memorial Day weekend fixture since 1911, is scheduled for May 25.

Cojocaru makes his own style

New York — Steven Cojocaru, West Coast style editor for People magazine, says he knows the fashion police are watching him along with the stars on Hollywood’s red carpet.

“My style is very outrageous,” says Cojocaru, who also makes regular appearances on NBC’s “Today” show. “It’s subject to criticism.”

The 40-year-old is pictured on the cover of his new book, “Red Carpet Diaries: Confessions of a Glamour Boy,” wearing bell-bottom jeans, a black shirt and a patchwork coat with large fur lapels.

“My style is rock ‘n’ roll,” he told AP Radio in a recent interview. “I want to look like a train wreck. Train-wreck chic; it’s the next latest thing.”

When he critiques what the stars are wearing, Cojocaru sees himself as the office “water cooler,” reflecting what people are talking about, he said.

“I have a big mouth and I’m very opinionated, like most of my friends are.”
