School of Social Welfare plans Social Work Day
“From Ageless to Aging … The Timeless Face of Social Work” will be the theme of the Kansas University School of Social Welfare’s 53rd annual Social Work Day today.
The event runs from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. in the Kansas Union. Keynote speakers will be Erin Gruwell, a California teacher whose story is being made into a movie by Universal Studios, and Nancy Kropf, a professor of social work from the University of Georgia whose research focuses on older adults and their families.
Several instructors, professionals and students will receive awards. The Social Work Alumni Society faculty award will be presented to Mark Ezell, associate professor, and to Jean Peterson, director of practicum. The Margo Award for Excellence in Field Practicum Instruction will go to Donna Park of the Valeo Behavioral Health Care Center in Topeka and Tom Schroeder of the Johnson County Mental Health Center in Shawnee.
Student awards will go to Sarah Goodwin, a senior from Prairie Village; Erin Krause, a graduate student from Overland Park; Rebecca Wirth, a graduate student from Lawrence; and Kimberly Brabits, a graduate student from Kansas City, Mo.

Baker professor named to Teachers Hall of Fame
A professor at Baker University will be one of seven Kansas educators inducted this summer to the Kansas Teachers Hall of Fame in Dodge City.
Bill Neuenswander, professor and director of teacher education, will be inducted during a ceremony June 7. There are more than 300 educators in the Hall of Fame.
Neuenswander, 66, has been in education for 45 years. He taught at the elementary, junior high and high school levels before becoming a principal and later a superintendent in Cheney, Baldwin and Abilene. He joined Baker’s full-time faculty in 1995.
Tom Mundinger, principal at Baldwin Elementary School, nominated Neuenswander for the honor.

6News to begin early
Channel 6 News at 6 will begin 30 minutes early today because of Kansas City Royals baseball.
The live, half-hour newscast will air at 5:30 p.m. The Royals’ game with the Red Sox is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. in Boston.
6News Nightside should begin at its usual time at 10 p.m.
