Professor’s composition part of symphony concert

“Flint Hills Contours Variations” by Charles Hoag, Kansas University professor of theory and composition, will be among the selections played by the KU Symphony Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Lied Center.

Tickets are $7 for general admission and $5 for students and seniors.

Hoag teaches composition and graduate courses in 20th-century music theory and directs the New Music Ensemble. The Kansas City Symphony, the Oklahoma City Symphony, the Warsaw National Philharmonic and others have performed his music. KU graduate student Steven McDonald, Lawrence, will conduct Hoag’s piece.

The orchestra also will play “Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun” by Claude Debussy, performed by flutist Heather Tribble; Max Bruch’s “Violin Concerto No. 1, Opus 26,” performed by KU associate professor of violin Ben Sayevich; and Ludwig von Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 6, Opus 68.”

Topeka Ad Federation to hold art fund-raiser

Topeka — The Topeka Advertising Federation will hold the second annual Art and Music Extravaganza on Friday. The event is a fund-raiser for the organization’s scholarship fund, programs and services.

Art by local high school and college students will be on display during the opening reception from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Florentine Room of the Jayhawker Tower. Winners will be announced at this event. Best of show winners in the high school and college divisions will receive $200.

After the reception, a concert and dance will be in Jayhawk Theatre. Featured bands will be Cold Turkey, The Strangers, Backseat Driver, Avarus and The Primetime Heroes.

Tickets are $7 in advance, $10 at the door and are available at CD Tradepost, Wolfe’s Art, Arts Council of Topeka and Super Sonic Music in Topeka and Lawrence.
