Artists encouraged to enter LOYO show

Lawrence and area artists are encouraged to submit entries for the third annual Lawrence Own-Your-Own art exhibition and sale. The event is a benefit for visual artists in the Lawrence area and the Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center.

There is no entry fee, and all works must be two- or three-dimensional originals and submitted by slides. Artists may submit up to five slides (no photos), and more than $1,500 in prizes will be given away, with possible Patron Purchase Awards up for grabs as well.

Entries (slides and entry form) should be sent to: Lawrence Own-Your-Own, 1628 Alvamar Drive, Lawrence 66047. All entries must be postmarked by July 1. The exhibit will be Sept. 27-Oct. 5 in Lawrence.

Library appoints new public spokeswoman

Maria Butler, former Lawrence Public Library reference and administrative assistant, has assumed the library’s community relations position. She replaces Sandra Wiechert.

Butler has been with the library since 1998 and has a master’s degree in historical administration and museum studies.

Wiechert retired April 30 after 16 1/2 years at the library.

KAC touring program accepting applicants

The Kansas Arts Commission is accepting applications from performing artists for inclusion on the Kansas Touring Program Roster. Individual Kansas artists or touring companies in theater, dance or music can apply each year.

Applicants go through a panel review process, and those accepted will serve on the roster for a three-year term (July 1, 2004-June 30, 2007). KTP artists get KAC grant support by contracting with presenters to perform outside their home area. Those eligible are granted 40 percent of the artists fee when they contract with KTP artists.

Heart of America to stage ‘Twain’s Eden’

Baldwin — Heart of America Performing Arts will stage “Twain’s Eden” Tuesday through June 15 at Rice Auditorium on the Baker University campus.

The production is part of HAPA’s inaugural summer season.

“Twain’s Eden” is a comedy based on Mark Twain’s writings about Adam and Eve. It is an original adaptation by HAPA team members Lori Lee Triplett and Jeff McLaughlin.

Workshops on theatrical lighting will be given at 4 p.m. June 14 in conjunction with the show.

Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 3 p.m. June 15.

Other events in the summer season include a “HAPA Dance Event” on June 27-28, “Over the River and Through the Woods” on July 8-13, the Steve Miller K.C. Band on July 18-19, and the premiere of the drama “Women of the Wind” on Aug. 12-16 and 19-23.
