Rockers come to Toronto’s aid

Toronto — Canada is turning to rock ‘n’ roll to help revive its tourism industry, hard hit by the SARS outbreak and a mad cow disease scare earlier this year.

The Rolling Stones and a host of fellow rockers — including former ‘N Sync singer Justin Timberlake and groups AC/DC and Rush — have been recruited to give a daylong concert on Wednesday.

The Stones’ Mick Jagger promised that the Toronto concert would be unforgettable:

“We are so excited about coming to Toronto to play in front of such a huge number of people, with such an incredible lineup of talented singers and musicians,” Jagger told The Associated Press. “It’s going to be a great day for all of us and one we’ll never forget.”

Royal couple go Austrian

Salzburg, Austria — Britain’s Prince Charles and his longtime companion, Camilla Parker Bowles, began a private visit to Salzburg on Saturday by taking in the city’s famed summer music festival.

Charles and Parker Bowles were guests of Austrian billionaire Donald Kahn, who planned to fete the couple with a gala dinner at his home, the Austria Press Agency reported.

Today they plan to attend a production of “Die Entfuehrung aus dem Serail” (“The Abduction from the Seraglio”), an opera by Mozart, who was born in Salzburg.

City to honor hometown director

Rome — Rome will pay homage to Federico Fellini this fall — the 10th anniversary of his death — with exhibits, photo shows, concerts and screenings of clips from his movies.

“Romarcord” — named after Fellini’s Oscar-winning “Amarcord” — will explore the director’s relationship with the capital, where he lived for many years and set some of his classic films, including 1960’s “La Dolce Vita.”

The tribute will begin in late September with a series of giant pictures displayed at some of Rome’s sites that were significant to him, officials said this past week.

Fellini died on Oct. 31, 1993, at age 73. His career spanned some four decades and about 20 movies.

Mother Teresa events planned

Calcutta, India — A film festival and concert are among the events planned by followers of Mother Teresa when she is beatified in October.

Mother Teresa, the Roman Catholic nun who devoted her life to helping the poor in the slums of Calcutta, died in 1997 at age 87.

Her beatification will take place at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome on Oct. 19. It will be shown live in downtown Calcutta.

The film festival will begin Nov. 1. The Rev. C.M. Paul, the festival’s coordinator, said it would include “Something Beautiful for God.”
