Ted Williams’ friends and fellow Boston Red Sox look back at the acclaimed slugger in the one-hour documentary “The Teammates” (7 p.m., ESPN).

Based on the novel “Teammates” by David Halberstam (Hyperion, 2003) and narrated by Boston humorist Dick Flavin, “The Teammates” offers anecdotes from Bobby Doerr, Johnny Pesky and Dom DiMaggio about their six-decade-long association with a man whom many consider to be the best who ever played the game.

As DiMaggio and Pesky travel to visit Williams on his deathbed, and Doerr is interviewed from home, their accounts take viewers back in time to Williams’ 1941 All-Star game home run, Doerr tarpon fishing with Williams, Pesky’s hit off Spud Chandler and Williams’ batting clinic on the Rogue River. The men also praise Williams for putting his career on hold for two tours of duty during World War II and the Korean War.
