Driver, passenger thrown from car, die

Two Fort Scott residents were killed early Thursday in a car accident.

Dustin Chance, 27, and his passenger, Gabriel Parsons, 26, died in the accident, which happened at 2:45 a.m. on U.S. Highway 69 about two miles south of Fort Scott, the Kansas Highway Patrol said.

The patrol said Chance and Parsons were thrown their car when it struck a guardrail and a bridge. Parsons was then run over by three other vehicles. The driver of one of the vehicles did not stop and was being sought, the patrol said.

Ex-government worker charged with theft

A former employee of the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kan., was charged Thursday and accused of stealing more than $500 from the government’s Treasurer’s Office.

Donita Kay Canady, Kansas City, Kan., surrendered Thursday to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

Chris Schneider, assistant district attorney, said Canady had worked in the Treasurer’s Office but did not know in what capacity or for how long. Canady was charged with one count of felony theft.
