Items needed to complete reading kits

The Roger Hill Volunteer Center needs a couple of people or a small group to shop for items to complete Success by 6 Read On! literacy kits.

The kits are part of a program to help parents teach fundamental reading skills to children up to age 6. The kits include a book and objects such as textured materials or items from the story. Parents may check out the kits at Ballard Center.

The volunteer center has 17 complete kits and money to complete 40. Volunteers do not need to contribute money, only collect items.

The Salvation Army was not available for comment on its fan drive Saturday. 6News staff collected fans for needy residents at both Lawrence Hy-Vee Store locations.

Cody Howard, 6News news director, said stocked fans sold out at both Hy-Vee locations. He said at the Clinton Parkway location, 16 fans and about $50 was collected.

To donate a fan, drop it off at the Salvation Army office, 946 N.H., between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Donated fans do not have to be new.

Immediate volunteer needs

  • Lawrence Municipal Airport needs volunteers July 20-22 to assist visitors during the Dole Institute static display of vintage World War II aircraft at the airport. Volunteers will help direct visitors, coordinate safety areas, monitor crowd behaviors and provide security at designated airport sites. To volunteer, call Janice Smith at 842-0000.

  • Planning committees are forming for the local March of Dimes 2004 WalkAmerica! fund-raising walk. The March of Dimes is a nonprofit organization focusing on health in babies. The first meetings of the committees will be in August. Call Nicole Huey at (785) 228-0084 for more information.
