Helping out

Blain Cerney, left, a University of Missouri student, and Eric Powell, a Florida State University student, work at the Pelathe Community Resource Center, 1423 Haskell Ave., through the Break Away Alternative Break Connection. Forty-five college students from across the country spent a week in Lawrence learning about American Indian issues and the importance of diversity through community-service projects and workshop sessions. The students prepped the center's fence for a new coat of paint on Thursday. The goal is for students to implement their new leadership and service skills back at their individual colleges.
