Feds pick 32nd Street alignment for trafficway

The South Lawrence Trafficway should be finished by building a four-lane highway through the Baker Wetlands, the federal government concluded in a definitive study released Monday afternoon.

The $110.2 million project should be built along a 32nd Street alignment, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said, in its study released Monday afternoon. The highway would connect U.S. Highway 59 at the southern edge of Lawrence with Kansas Highway 10 at Noria Road southeast of the city.

In its document, called an environmental impact statement, the corps cast aside an option for spending $128.5 million to build along a 42nd Street route, running south of the Wakarusa River.

In the document, the corps said the 32nd Street route was “the least environmentally damaging practicable alternative” available to satisfy the project’s purpose and need.

Copies of the document are scheduled to be delivered to area libraries and government offices Tuesday. The corps will accept public comments about the document for at least 30 days, beginning Jan. 17, before issuing a final decision about the project.
