Resident reports attack by pit bull

A 23-year-old Lawrence man told police he was attacked by a neighbor’s pit bull about 8 a.m. Tuesday in the 2500 block of Redbud Lane.

Details about the incident weren’t available from Lawrence Police Thursday night, but the man said in an interview that the attack was unprovoked and that the dog wasn’t on a leash.

Troy A. Hicks said he had just dropped his young children off at day care. He said he was returning to his apartment building when a neighbor walked by with two pit bulls — only one of which was on a leash.

“The one not on the leash started rushing at me. I yelled at the guy to get his dog. By then the dog was on me,” Hicks said. “He tried grabbing on to my wrist. I moved my arm out of the way and he just kind of barely nicked it. He did latch on to my upper left thigh. It didn’t break the skin because I was wearing blue jeans. As soon as he latched on, I hit him in the head to get him off, but he bruised my leg pretty good.”
