Hearing postponed in manslaughter charge

A preliminary hearing was postponed Tuesday for a man charged with involuntary manslaughter for the death of a woman last summer on U.S Highway 40.

Adrian P. Keeling, 21, who has addresses in Topeka and Lawrence, is scheduled to be back at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 16 in Douglas County District Court before Judge Robert Fairchild. Keeling’s attorney, Charles Whitman, requested for additional time to prepare the defense.

Keeling is accused of driving a 1997 Ford F-250 pickup truck when it overturned July 13 along U.S. Highway 40 west of Lawrence. A passenger in the truck, Syreeta D. Oaks, 19, Topeka, was killed in the accident. Police determined the truck had been reported stolen from a Lawrence residence on July 7.

Keeling was charged with involuntary manslaughter, driving under the influence and felony theft. He is jailed on bonds totaling $13,500.
