Banks, post office closed for Presidents Day

Today is Presidents Day, and some offices, businesses and schools are closed.

Baldwin public schools are closed today; however, Lawrence schools are open, and Kansas and Baker universities will have classes.

Most banks will be closed today. The U.S. Postal Service will not deliver mail, and its offices will be closed.

City offices in Lawrence and Eudora will be closed. Baldwin city offices will be open, as will Douglas County government offices.

Higher education: Author to speak at Baker

Baldwin — The Rev. Earl W. Carter Jr., an author and commentator on the BET network, will speak at Baker University.

Carter, founder and senior pastor of Christ Ministries Church of God in Christ in Orlando, Fla., will speak at 11 a.m. Feb. 25 in Rice Auditorium on the Baldwin campus.

Carter is author of “No Apology Necessary,” which contends that Old Testament prophecies foretold African slavery and holds promise for relieving racial tension in the United States. He was also featured on the TV program “Bountiful Blessings.”

Immigration: Bosnian refugees adapt to living in the Midwest

St. Louis — Almost a decade after the first 13 families arrived in St. Louis, Bosnians are finding their emotional and material niche, said Saint Louis University sociologist Hisako Matsuo. Bosnians now number up to 50,000 in St. Louis.
