Mobile home burns in second recent blaze

A mobile home that was heavily damaged in a fire Dec. 30 caught fire again late Sunday afternoon.

Workers were in the process of dismantling what was left of the mobile home at 1045 E. 23rd St., near the Sonic Drive In restaurant.

Some equipment they were using caused insulation in the ceiling to catch fire, said Battalion Chief Jerry Karr of Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical.

Firefighters were called about 4 p.m. to extinguish the blaze.

The mobile home hadn’t been repaired after the first fire, so no damage estimate was listed, Karr said.

No one was reported injured in Sunday’s fire.

Manhattan pilot injured in small-plane crash

Taylor Mill, Ky. — A small plane crashed Sunday afternoon in a train yard about 10 miles south of Cincinnati while trying to make an emergency landing, police said.

Pilot Gregory Burgess, 35, of Manhattan, was treated at University Hospital in Cincinnati for minor injuries. He was the only person on board the Piper twin-engine aircraft when it crashed about 3:30 p.m., Taylor Mill police Chief Steve Knauf said. Burgess was flying to Lunken Airport in Cincinnati from Manhattan.

Knauff said the National Transportation Safety Board is investigating a cause.

There was no property damage at the railroad yard, where old train cars are refurbished, Knauff said.
