Wichita: Sheriff to notify parents of youths’ traffic stops

Young drivers beware: The cops will be telling your parents on you.

Under a voluntary parental notification program to be unveiled next week, drivers under the age of 21 who are stopped by sheriff’s deputies in Sedgwick County may soon have to face the wrath of their parents as well.

If an under-21 driver in a vehicle that has been registered for the program is stopped by sheriff’s deputies, the deputy will complete a notification card that is sent to the parents.

The card includes the time and location of the stop, the driver’s name and number of passengers, the reason for the stop and whether any traffic tickets were issued.

The Sheriff’s Department said the notifications will be mailed directly to parents so they can enforce any rules they may have for the drivers.

Washington D.C.: Wichita receives aerospace-job grant

Federal officials are giving Wichita, Kan., a $4 million grant to help the city find new jobs for its laid-off aerospace workers.

Kansas officials asked for the National Emergency Grant from the U.S. Department of Labor after dramatic layoffs after the 9-11 attacks. The money will pay for training programs to teach workers new skills.

About 11,000 workers have lost their jobs at Wichita’s aircraft manufacturing companies — Boeing Co., Cessna Aircraft, Raytheon Aircraft and Bombardier Aerospace. Workers can apply for the aid at any of the five Workforce Development Centers in the Wichita area.
