Lawrence vocalists to sing in honors choir

Eight choral students from Lawrence schools have been chosen to sing in the Kansas Honors Children’s Choir Feb. 28 in Wichita.

The children were chosen to participate in the 200-voice choir from among 700 audition tapes. The group, sponsored by the American Choral Directors Assn., will perform at the Kansas Music Educators Assn.’s convention at Century II in Wichita.

Music: Folk singer to present witty show at Union

A folk singer and songwriter described as “Conan O’Brien meets James Taylor” on Monday will bring his witty, comedic show to the Kansas Union.

Andrew Kerr, who got his start in stand-up comedy, sells out leading folk showcases in the Northeast. He has won the Northern California Songwriters Assn. Best Performer award five times.

His latest CD, “Rock Star,” displays a folk-rock-comedy blend as well as hip-hop influences.

Kerr will play at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Hawk’s Nest in the Kansas Union. Tickets are $5 for the public. Students get in free.

Alumni invited to play LHS anniversary concert

The Lawrence High School band, celebrating its 80th year, is inviting former band members to return 7:30 p.m. Thursday for an alumni concert in the auditorium at the high school, 1901 La.

The evening is planned as a “walk down memory lane” with the following former band directors returning to conduct the alumni band: Lindsey Williams (1998-2001), Jay Smith (1988-1998), Vic Sisk (1984-1988), Ed Bartley (1970-1984), David Catron (1967-1970) and R. Wayne Nelson (1950-1951).

Former band members who do not wish to play in the alumni band are encouraged to be audience members.

The concert is free. A reception will follow in the rotunda/cafeteria.

Also performing Thursday will be the Concert Band, directed by Darrell Cox, assistant LHS band director; and the Symphonic Band, directed by Mike Jones, LHS band director.
