Lawrence gets wet snow

If you were awake early Wednesday morning, chances are you saw Lawrence’s first substantial snowfall.

The heaviest wet flakes fell between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m., according to Matt Sayers, 6News meteorologist.

Sayers reported about a half-inch of snow accumulated on cars, but then melted fairly quickly.

“The snow stopped about 5 a.m. and we’ve had this misty, foggy stuff for a while since then,” said Matt Jacobs, another 6News meteorologist.

The snow moved to the east and was still falling in the Olathe area Wednesday morning. It was expected to end by noon, Jacobs said.

Combined with all of the rain from Tuesday, Lawrence got 0.9 of an inch of precipitation, Jacobs said.

“A half-inch was what was expected,” he said. “It was a nice rainfall.”

For the rest of Wednesday, the forecast calls for continued damp conditions under cloudy skies, with a high of 39.

“This evening, the cloudiness continues. And we could see some fog overnight. The temperatures will drop below freezing to 29 degrees,” Jacobs said.

Thursday’s forecast is for mostly cloudy skies, north winds 5 to 15, with a high of 44.

“On Thursday night, there’s a very slight chance of a flurry (15 to 20 percent), but no accumulations,” he said. The temperature Thursday night will drop to 26 degrees.

“Friday’s looking pretty chilly. The high will be 38, with mostly sunny skies,” he said. Winds will be breezy — about 10 to 20 mph.

The temperature will continue to drop Friday night, to a low of 22 by Saturday morning, under mostly clear skies.

“Saturday and Sunday, we start to warm up,” Jacobs said. The high on Saturday will be 49. Sunday’s high is expected to reach 57.
