KU dancers

Missa Brevis’ to include performance, public forum

August 16, 2003

A familiar face will return this fall to Kansas University to reconstruct a rarely performed Jose Limón masterpiece with the University Dance Company.

Sarah Stackhouse, who is internationally known for restaging Limón works and who last fall taught KU's company Limón's "Choreographic Offerings," will mount the challenging "Missa Brevis," a 40-minute long piece with a strong male soloist and a large chorus of dancers.

Two hundred fifty KU student vocalists, under the direction of choral activities director John Paul Johnson, and an orchestra will provide live accompaniment for the performance.

"Missa Brevis" was inspired by the music of Zoltán Kodaly, which was written during the siege of Budapest, Hungary, at the end of World War II. It's often described as a memento to cities destroyed by war and to the unconquerable spirits of human beings who rise in hope and survive.

The dancers won't be the only ones to benefit from Stackhouse's residency. Community activities -- including a panel discussion on art and war, an open rehearsal, lectures, master classes and several public performances -- also are scheduled.

Here's a look at those and other KU dance events in the coming semester:
