Misdemeanor battery charge filed in Medis case

The Douglas County District Attorney’s office announced Thursday that another charge has been filed in connection with a scuffle outside the Replay Lounge last winter in downtown Lawrence.

Luke Wells, who testified in court last month that he hit Jeffrey Medis once in the face during the Dec. 6, 2002, fight, was charged Thursday with misdemeanor battery.

In his testimony, Wells had said he struck Medis, a 29-year-old gay man, after Medis took two swings at Wells’ friend, Nikolaus Eichman.

Medis was found lying on the sidewalk, bloody and unconscious at 10th and Massachusetts streets.

In exchange for his testimony, the district attorney’s office granted Wells qualified immunity, agreeing not to use anything he said in court against him.

However, the immunity agreement does not apply to other information gathered in the police investigation.
