Kidman gets an apology

London — Nicole Kidman accepted a public apology and undisclosed damages Thursday to settle a libel lawsuit against a newspaper that suggested she had an affair with actor Jude Law.

The actress’ lawyers told the High Court libel hearing that March 6 the Daily Mail alleged Kidman had tempted Law to cheat on his wife, actress Sadie Frost, causing the breakdown of their marriage.

The story also suggested that Kidman was dishonest for repeatedly denying an affair, her lawyer said. Kidman and Law co-star in the upcoming film “Cold Mountain.”

Associated Newspapers, editor Paul Dacre and journalist Nicole Lampert accepted that the allegations were untrue and without foundation and apologized for the embarrassment caused to Kidman. They also will pay her legal costs.

Date set for June’s farewell

New York — A Sept. 9 release date has been set for June Carter Cash’s final recording, “Wildwood Flower,” completed just before her death in May at age 73 of complications from heart surgery.

It was produced by John Carter Cash, her son with country music legend Johnny Cash, and recorded in part in June Carter Cash’s Hendersonville, Tenn., bedroom.

Johnny Cash is heard on three songs, and the couple’s last recorded duet, “Temptation,” is also featured.

Venice film fest attracts Allen

Rome — Woody Allen, inspired by his love for the city of Venice, will open the 60th Venice Film Festival Aug. 27 with the world premiere of his new film “Anything Else,” festival organizers said Thursday.

The filmmaker “will be there. He loves Venice,” said Moritz de Hadeln, director of the festival that runs through Sept. 6.

But like many of the other notable films to be shown at the festival, “Anything Else,” which stars Jason Biggs, Christina Ricci and Allen, won’t be competing for the prestigious Golden Lion prize.

Other high-profile films that aren’t up for prizes include Robert Benton’s “The Human Stain,” starring Anthony Hopkins and Nicole Kidman, and Robert Rodriguez’s “Once Upon a Time in Mexico,” with a cast that includes Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek and Johnny Depp.

Bosworth knows fame is fickle

New York — Kate Bosworth, who played a surfer girl in last year’s “Blue Crush,” is being called the “Next Big Thing” in Hollywood — and that’s made her wary.

“When someone says something nice, I wonder about their real motive,” the 20-year-old actress tells Entertainment Weekly magazine for its Aug. 1 issue. “It’s a horrible way to be, but if you’re a hundred percent innocent in this business, you’re going to be eaten alive.”

Bosworth stars opposite Topher Grace and Josh Duhamel in the romantic comedy “Win a Date With Tad Hamilton!!!” — the story of a naive West Virginia girl who wins a date with a celebrity.

Her upcoming films also include “Wonderland” with Val Kilmer, scheduled for release later this year, and “Beyond the Sea” opposite Kevin Spacey. Bosworth will play ’50s ingenue Sandra Dee; Spacey will play her husband, singer Bobby Darin.
