Journal-World seeks history of closing schools

For three Lawrence schools, May 23 won’t just mark the end of the academic year. East Heights, Centennial and Riverside schools are closing their doors forever.

The Journal-World wants to mark the momentous occasion with a look back at the students, teachers and events that gave the buildings life.

We’re looking for old and new photographs, yearbooks, past and present students, teachers, staff and parents.

What made these schools special? What will you remember most about them?

We’re also interested in any parties, receptions or commemorative events being planned.

Please send information to Journal-World arts editor Mindie Paget by May 7 at mpaget@ljworld.com or 645 N.H., Lawrence 66044. You can also fax information to her attention at 843-4512 or call her at 832-7187.

CornerBank to unveil permanent sculpture

An 8-foot tall, stainless steel sculpture by Lawrence artist Jan Gaumnitz might have been inspired by spring, but it will grace the exterior of CornerBank all year round.

“Spring Spiral,” below, will be unveiled at a Friday reception at the bank, 4621 W. Sixth St. Gaumnitz will be present at the event, which is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Her sculpture was chosen from several proposals for a permanent art installation at the bank’s new facility. New paintings and sculptures by Gaumnitz also will be on display inside the bank.

The reception is free and open to the public. The sculpture will be unveiled at 5:30 p.m. The exhibit runs April 28 through June 28. Artwork may be viewed during the bank’s hours: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9 a.m.-noon Saturday.

Wanted: miracle moms

With Mother’s Day just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about what mom means to you.

Do you have a miraculous mom? If so, the Journal-World wants to know about her. And remember, miraculous doesn’t mean she has to walk on water. Small miracles count, too.

What does she do to make you feel special? Has she faced adversity and still managed to be a pillar of strength in your family? Has she helped you through difficult times in your life? Tell us her story.

The Journal-World will choose the most touching, humorous and otherwise worthy stories to feature in its Mother’s Day edition on May 11.

Please send your stories/nominations by May 4 to Mindie Paget at mpaget@ljworld.com or 645 N.H., Lawrence 66044. You can also fax them to her attention at 843-4512 or call her at 832-7187.
