Stonecarving workshop open to amateurs, pros

A workshop this weekend will introduce amateurs to the basics of stone carving and give veteran stone sculptors time to create more work.

The Kansas Sculpture Research Center, a nonprofit organization that promotes sculpting, will hold its fourth workshop in basic and intermediate stone carving Friday through Sunday at Myles’ Mountain, just outside Lawrence

The workshop will include training sessions on basic steel tool-making, hand-carving technique, power tool use, stone finishing and stone types and selection. It also will include carving time. Four professional sculptor/teachers and guest speakers will assist participants throughout the session.

Each participant will be provided with a piece of clean limestone, with optional pieces of marble and alabaster available.

Lawrence Photo Alliance announces contest

The Lawrence Photo Alliance announces the statewide and Greater Kansas City Area photography competition called Kansas/KC Camera 2003.

Any resident of the greater Kansas City area may enter up to four slides in the competition. Deadline is May 15.

The photos may be taken of any subject, in any location. Mixed media is acceptable if photography is the major element of the piece and it can be hung on a wall.

Juror for the competition is Luke Jordan, who has been teaching at Kansas University for a number of years, as well as serving as adjunct professor at the Kansas City Art Institute and Washburn University.

One thousand dollars in prizes will be awarded. The resulting exhibition will be shown from June 2 to July 18 at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H., where entry forms are available.

Young local pianists vie for musical honor

Twenty-eight local piano students of Jean Drumm have registered as candidates for membership in the National Fraternity of Student Musicians, sponsored by the National Guild of Piano Teachers, Teacher Division of the American College of Musicians.

Drumm is a member of that organization.

The young pianists will perform at the National Piano-Playing Auditions May 14-15 at Kansas University. They will compete for pledge, local, district, hobbyist, duet, ensemble, state, national and international honors. The American College of Musicians will evaluate the students’ performances based on their presentation of baroque, classic, romantic and modern works.

More than 100,000 piano pupils throughout the world will participate in the annual auditions, which are held at more than 880 music centers.

Free State graduate in L.A. fashion show

Alyssa Johnson, a 2000 graduate of Free State High School and junior majoring in fashion design at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, designed, illustrated and constructed garments for Hurley International and Gamepro magazine during the past eight months.

Two of her garments have been selected for the college’s 23rd annual benefit fashion show, which is expected to raise more than $1 million dollars in scholarship money.

The show will be May 3 in Beverly Hills, Calif.
