Workshop sessions to begin in May

Lawrence writer Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg coordinates “A Circle of Women, a Circle of Words,” a women’s writing workshop sponsored by the Lawrence-Douglas County Housing Authority’s resident services program.

Goldberg coordinates a master’s degree program in transformative language arts at Goddard College in Plainfield, Vt. Transformative language arts is the intentional use of written or spoken word to empower individuals to foster enduring meaning for themselves, a stronger sense of identity, courage for growth and change, and vision to seek and restore balance to individual lives, communities and the earth.

Goldberg lives in Lawrence and facilitates workshops for people of all backgrounds.

Here are a few of her upcoming workshops:

  • MotherWrites: Open to young mothers in public housing in Lawrence. The free workshops will begin within the next few months. Check the resident services office for an exact start date, to be announced soon.
  • A Circle of Women, a Circle of Words: The next session begins in early May. The free workshops are open to housing authority clients.
  • Living with Cancer writing workshop: 10 a.m.-noon Saturdays beginning May 10. The free sessions, to be held at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, will run for six weeks. Call the LMH oncology center at 840-2800 for more information. (Goldberg is a breast cancer survivor).
