Riverside seeks photos, memories for display
Former staff and students at Riverside School are being sought to help celebrate the elementary school’s history.
Riverside will close at the end of this academic year.
Sherry Tamerius, a fourth-grade teacher at Riverside, said photographs of students and teachers at the school would be collected for a display May 3 at Riverside’s carnival. Written recollections of life and times at Riverside also will be accepted.
Pictures can be submitted to Tamerius at Riverside, 601 N. Iowa, Lawrence 66044. A brief summary of the picture would be helpful. Original photos will be returned. A mailing address for loaned items is requested.

Condolences being sent to family of slain soldier
Haskell Indian Nations University officials are gathering cards and letters of support for the family of Army Pfc. Lori Piestewa, a Hopi killed in Iraq.
Cards and letters dropped off at Haskell President Karen Swisher’s office by 3 p.m. today will be included in a package being sent to Piestewa’s family.
The package will not include monetary gifts. Those wanting to send money are invited to call 749-8404, ext. 715.
Piestewa, 23, was a single mother raising a 4-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl in Tuba City, Ariz.

KUnited coalition wins student body presidency
Kansas University students have elected a new student body president.
Andy Knopp, a Manhattan junior, was elected with 2,324, or 62 percent of the votes. He and his running mate, Catherine Bell, a Coffeyville junior, are part of the KUnited coalition.
They defeated Drew Thomas, a Hays junior, and Fallon Farokhi, a Lawrence junior, the Delta Force candidates who received 1,211 votes, or 33 percent.
The other candidates, Andy Foertsch, a Lenexa junior, and Brett Wadsworth, an Overland Park junior, received 184 votes, or 5 percent. They represented the Lord Wads and his 12 Knights of the Crusade party.
Voting took place Wednesday and Thursday, with results announced Thursday night. Knopp and Bell will be sworn in April 23.
