KPR comedy show wins national award

“Right Between the Ears,” the popular sketch comedy show produced by Kansas Public Radio at Kansas University, has received a Golden Reel Award from the National Federation of Community Broadcasters.

The awards celebrate station-based and independent productions that exemplify outstanding and creative use of radio. The Golden Reel, Silver Reel and Special Merit awards were presented March 21 at the annual Community Radio Conference in San Francisco. “Right Between the Ears” won in the category Best Music/Entertainment.

The show has been produced since 1985. It was formerly known as “The Imagination Workshop.” Its next performances will be at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. April 19 at Liberty Hall, 642 Mass. The 8 p.m. show will be broadcast live on KPR stations.

KU professor’s artwork part of ‘Heaven and Hell’

San Diego, Calif. — What do belly dancing performances, a gothic fashion show and original paintings have in common?

They’re all part of the “Heaven and Hell” Book Release Party and Exhibition that Barry Fitzgerald, Kansas University associate professor of visual communication, will attend Friday at the Abbey Church in San Diego.

Fitzgerald produced two illustrations for the book, which features 110 works from 58 leading artists from around the world. The book-signing party marks the premiere exhibition of their artwork, a show that will continue on to Philadelphia, New York and Los Angeles.

Fitzgerald has taught illustration and drawing for five years at KU and has a bachelor’s degree in graphic design and a master’s degree in illustration.

As a practicing illustrator, his clients include The New York Times, Business Week, Consumer Reports, AARP, McGraw Hill, K-Tel Records, Ford, Hogue Wineries, Sonic Drive-In, Playboy Jazz Festival and

Children’s Television Network.

Artist Tom Friedman to discuss work with KU

Artist Tom Friedman will discuss his work at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Spencer Museum of Art auditorium as part of Kansas University’s art department’s Visiting Artist Series.

Friedman is an internationally recognized artist. His work takes many forms, including sculpture, installation and photography. He has had recent solo shows at the MCA in Chicago, the Yerba Buena Center for Contemporary Art in San Francisco and Galleria Gian Enzo Sperone in Rome.

The artist series brings four to eight people annually to KU and is operated by the art department’s Visiting Artist Committee, a group comprised of faculty and students, both undergraduate and graduate.

April Brown Bag Classics a smorgasbord of sounds

Music lovers can look forward to a lively variety of performances during this month’s Brown Bag Classics, the free Wednesday lunchtime concerts held from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. at Alderson Auditorium in the Kansas Union.

KU Sax Quartets will play Wednesday. Pianist Eungoo Hwang will perform April 23. Electronic Music Ensemble will wrap up the month’s variety with a show on April 30.
